MURIEL JEAN
Age 96, passed away September 2, 2017. She was born May 20, 1921, in London, Ontario. She attended secretarial school in Canada and worked in New York City for a prestigious law firm and a division of Allied Chemical before joining US Steel in 1952 where she was a valued employee for over 30 years. She started her career as an Executive Secretary in their NYC office and later transferred to their Headquarters office in Pittsburgh, PA where she was the Administrative Assistant for the Executive Director of US Steel's philanthropic foundation. She truly loved this work and all those she came in contact with over the years, including university presidents and many others affiliated with charitable causes. Muriel lived the majority of her life in downtown Pittsburgh, PA and was a very active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburgh. Upon her retirement, she traveled extensively enjoying many trips with her late husband, Hubert Thornton, who was also a longtime employee of US Steel. In 2011, she moved to Jacksonville, FL to be closer to family. Muriel will be remembered as a loving mother and loving aunt with great intelligence, grace, poise and sense of humor who was well read and loved to travel. She is survived by her nephews, Joseph J. Czerkawski, Jr., MD, Charles V. Czerkawski, Anthony Eames and nieces, Sharon Eames, Carol Eames, and Lois Eames Vallaint; along with several loving great-nieces and great-nephews. She was predeceased by her late husband of 27 years, Hubert P. Thornton; her son, Stephen R. Slotterback; her brothers, Jerry Eames and Jack Eames and her sisters, Doris Eames Taylor and Freda Czerkawski. Friends will be received, Monday September 11, 2017, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the H.P.
