Age 87, peacefully at his home in Troy, MT on February 2, 2018. James was born in Pittsburgh to Edward J. Sedler and Anna Kelskay Sedler. After graduating from Allderdice High School, he began an improbable journey leading through the West Coast during the Beat Generation years and eventually to remote northwest Montana. There he is fondly remembered in the Forest Service as the old man of the fire crews, and for mentoring many young college students through his love of books and philosophy. After retiring, James continued to pursue his love of music and gardening; devoted himself to reading and studying philosophy, anthropology, and ecology; and published a volume of poems. He was preceded in death by his beloved sister, Adele Sedler Fargotstein; and by his first wife, Elizabeth “Liz” Elmendorf Sedler. He is survived by his loving wife, Laura Zimbelman Sedler; four sons and six grandsons; and nephew, Fred M. Fargotstein; and special cousin, Karl Krieger of Pittsburgh.
