Age 73, passed away on February 18, 2018, in Houston, TX. She was born on June 27, 1944, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Clarence and Dorothy Lauer. Kathy grew up in Pittsburgh where she graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School. She completed her bachelor's degree in nursing at the University of Pittsburgh. In 1966, Kathy began her nursing career at McGee Hospital. She continued nursing and began teaching in Largo, FL, at Largo Medical Center from 1981 to 1985. Kathy earned her doctoral degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, in 1988. She then joined Rush University Medical Center College of Nursing in Chicago, IL, as assistant professor in 1989. During her 23-year tenure at Rush, she held escalating faculty positions, where she served as Associate Chair in the Department of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing for many years. Kathy was a consummate professional and generous human being, beloved and admired by her family, friends, students, and colleagues. She is survived by her sister, Barbara Welsh; her niece, Christine Welsh Mathers; and her great-niece, Jenna Elizabeth Mathers, all of Houston, TX. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Dorothy Lauer. Kathy will be buried on Sunday, February 25, 2018, at Serenity Gardens in Largo, FL, alongside her parents. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to either the American Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals or to a special scholarship in her honor through Rush University's philanthropic Golden Lamp Society at http://rush.convio.net/klauer.
