MARILYN (PACKARD)
A resident of Pittsburgh for 45 years, Marilyn (Packard) Ham, age 89, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died peacefully Friday, October 27, 2017, at the Edenwald Retirement Community in Towson, MD, where she had resided since 2008. Mrs. Ham was born June 28, 1928, in Putnam, CT, the only surviving child of Everett Dunham and Gladys (Fox) Packard. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Connecticut College in 1950, and married Clifford Carmichael Ham in Wethersfield, CT in 1951. Dr. Ham, who died in 1995, was a Professor of Urban Planning at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public and International Affairs for many years. Mrs. Ham was noted for involvement in civic and outdoors groups. Along with her husband and another couple, the Fischers, she helped establish and lead a senior citizens' walking group, the Ramblers, which continues to hike weekly through different sections of Pittsburgh for exercise and to develop historical and natural awareness. She and her husband were also active in the Pittsburgh Council of American Youth Hostels and the Allegheny Group of the Sierra Club, receiving the Conservationist of the Year Award in 1987 and the Life Achievement Award in 1996 from these organizations. While in Pittsburgh, Mrs. Ham earned a Master's degree in geography from Pitt, and compiled and edited Historic Oakland, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: Clifford C. Ham Articles from The Oakland Newspaper 1989-1995. Two sons, Gregory, of Glen Arm, MD, and Douglas, of Arlington, VA, survive Mrs. Ham. A third son, Gordon, succumbed to cancer in 2012. Mrs. Ham immensely enjoyed her nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A Service and reception will be held at her church, the Towson Unitarian Universalist Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Road, Lutherville, MD, on Saturday January 13, 2018, at 2 p.m. Donations may be sent in Mrs. Ham's name to the Edenwald Scholarship Fund, ATTN: Bridget, 800 Southerly Road, Towson, MD 21286. The Fund benefits Edenwald employees in furthering their education.
