Age 83, passed away on March 14, 2018, at Quail Park Memory Care in Visalia, CA. Sylvia is survived by her daughter, Julie (Tom) Dykstra; son, Jim (Amy) Gabrielse; sister, Sharon Whalen; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Steve; her son, Steve; her parents, Simon and Cornelia Dykstra; and her stepmother, Sylvia Moermand. Sylvia was born in China to missionary parents. Her family returned to the US around 1942 and Sylvia lived in Washington, Ontario, Canada, and Michigan during the remaining years of her childhood. She married Steve in 1955 and they enjoyed 61 years together until his passing in 2016. They spent 58 years in Pittsburgh until they adventurously decided to move to California in 2015 to be near their daughter. Sylvia was known for her acts of service, delicious meals, befriending the less fortunate, and generous spirit of hospitality. She taught piano lessons for many years, and sang in both the Bach and Mendelssohn choirs. She loved music, art, writing poetry, and travels to many parts of the world. One of her favorite experiences was spending three years with Steve in Dominica, where they volunteered for the Voice of Life, a Christian radio station associated with the Back to God Hour. The relationships she made there were very special to her. We treasure the memories of her devotion to God and his Word and her gracious service to others. Although Sylvia struggled with Alzheimer's for many years, it did not stop her from reaching out to those in need, even in her last months. The joy of the Lord was her strength. Friends will be received on Friday, March 23, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. at the GENE H. CORL, INC., FUNERAL CHAPEL AND CREMATION SERVICES OF MONROEVILLE, 4335 Northern Pike (412-372-2100). A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2018, at 11 a.m. at New Covenant Presbyterian Church, Monroeville, with a reception to follow. (Everyone please meet at the Church).
