Age 71, of St. Augustine, FL, passed away suddenly on October 11, 2017 at Flagler Hospital. Born in Pittsburgh, he lived most of his life in Pennsylvania before moving to Florida four years ago. Larry graduated from North Catholic High School and later earned a degree in electrical engineering from Penn State University, becoming a registered Professional Engineer in 1975. Larry worked at Pennsylvania Power & Light from 1967 until 2002, getting his start as a technician in Scranton, PA and eventually retiring as an area manager for Lancaster, PA. Following his retirement he was an elected County Commissioner for Manheim Township from 2004 until 2012, spearheading projects including the World Trade Center 9/11 Memorial at Overlook Park and the Manheim Township Public Library. Larry served in various roles, from member to chairman, for numerous community organizations. These include The Salvation Army, the Rotary Club, the Lancaster Foundation for Education and the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce. He was also a founder of the PP&L Community of Volunteers. During his career he received many accolades including the Paul Harris Fellowship Award and the PP&L Community Service Award. In his spare time Larry enjoyed golfing, watching sports, nature, model kits, and the celebration of holidays. He was known as an outgoing, charismatic person who always looked out for others. He was a talented handyman and a devoted family man. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Patton Downing; his two sons, Mark and Shane; sisters, Loretta Wells and Shirley Truxell; and brother, James Downing; and his beloved grandsons. Interment occurred at Lakewood Memorial Park, Cheswick, PA on Nov. 3, 2017.
