On August 20, 2017, after a brief stay in the hospital, Holstein DeHaven Cleaver III passed away at his home into the merciful arms of his one and only Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ. Born August 11, 1946, in Philadelphia, PA, he grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, the eldest of six children in a deeply Christian family. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he participated in student government and was a member of the rugby team. A loyal Tar Heels fan, he retained an abiding interest in both politics and sports for his entire life. After graduation, he moved to Nantucket Island, MA. There, after learning from Island craftsmen the skills for all phases of home restoration, he eventually started his own consulting and restoration business, Bellwether Associates. At the same time, he became involved with The Theater Workshop of Nantucket and performed in a number of plays and musicals. Later, when he moved to Pittsburgh, PA to be closer to his family, he continued to work in the restoration business. He leaves behind his former wife, Kathleen F. Cleaver; two children, Suzannah K. Cleaver and Brendan Pickell Cleaver (Lauren); and two granddaughters. He is survived by his five siblings, Boyd Cleaver (Charyl), Janet Patterson (Carl), William Cleaver (Julia), John Cleaver (Lisa), and Julie Cleaver; as well as seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Drs. Holstein DeHaven Cleaver, Jr. and Betty Pickell Cleaver. A memorial mass will be celebrated Monday, September 18, 2017, at 10 a.m. in St. Bernard's Church, Mt. Lebanon. The family suggests contributions in his memory be made to the Theater Workshop of Nantucket, 62 Center St., Nantucket, MA 02554 or St. Joseph's House of Hospitality, 1635 Bedford Ave., Pgh., PA 15219.
